Points of Interest

Atalaya - Huntington Winter Mansion
Murrells Inlet , South Carolina

Atalaya, the former winter home of the internationally famous American sculptress Anna Hyatt Huntington, is located in what is now Huntington Beach State Park. Surrounded by some 2,500 acres of native flora and fauna, the park offers many observation decks and walking trails to further enhance your enjoyment. The house, Atalaya, is a 55-room mansion with a 40-foot tower (Atalaya is Spanish for watchtower). The house is build as a large, square building enveloping a large, open interior court. Open 9a - 5p daily. FREE except in July & August when a small fee of 50 cents is charged. For more information phone 843-237-4440.

Brookgreen Garden, a formal garden reminiscent of the old English gardens but generously endowed with over 500 sculptures and other works of art from many American artists (including, of course, many by Anna Hyatt Huntington) is just across the street.

Browntown Museum
Lake City, South Carolina

So typical of Southern antebellum homes, the Brown-Burrows house is a small farmstead restored for your viewing pleasure. Also on the site are a smoke house, an outhouse, old-fashioned corn crib, a real cotton gin and a lot of other things sure to bring forth a ton of questions. Open Friday and Saturday (9a - 4p) and Sunday (2p - 5p). Located east of Lake City on SC-341. 843-558-2355.

Charles Towne features various 'hands-on' activities of the period and features a full-size model of the kind of sailing ship that crossed the Atlantic Ocean in the 17th century, bring colonists to the New World and supplying them with the things they couldn't make here.

The park also includes several gardens and a zoo. To make it easy for you a 30 minute narrative tram tour is available.

Charles Towne Landing is located at 1500 Old Towne Road (west of the Ashley River on SC 171) about 3 miles from downtown Charlestown.

Fort Moultrie National Monument
Charleston SC
A stalwart in early American coastal defenses, Ft Moultrie is the site of the first decisive victory in the American Revolution. It was significant in the War Between the States as a launching site for cannonballs into Ft Sumter. Reconstructed three times, it is a great exhiubit of how coastal defenses have evolved. From Charleston on US-17, right opnto SC-703, right again at Sullivans Island and right again on Middle Street. Continue 1.5 miles to the fort. Open 9a-6p daily Memorial Day to Labor Day. Closes at 5p remainder of the year. Allow at least 1½ hours, more probably 2, for the self-guided tour. FREE. For more information phone 843-883-3123.

More Information: http://www.nps.gov/fomo/

Fort Sumter National Monument
Charleston SC
Most famous for its role in the War Between the States, Fort Sumter is the site of the first engagement of that war April 12th and 13th, 1861. After 34 hours of intense fighting the Union forces surrenered to the Confederates who then withstood a 22 month siege. It was a black 22 months for the Confederate forces under constant bombardment from the Union forces (see Fort Moultrie) and Fort Sumter's brick fortifications were literally reduced to rubble. Only access is via concessionaire tour boats which depart from Patriots Point in Mt Pleasant and also the City Marina on Lockwood Blvd (just south of US-17 in Charleston). Tours are conducted by National Park Service personnel. Tours depart from the Marina at 9:30a, noon and 2:30p and from the Patriots Point landing at 10:45a, 1:30p and 4p daily from April 1 through Labor Day weekend.   Allow at least 2½ hours for the tour. While the Fort admission is free, the fare for the boat ride to and from the fort is $10. For more information phone 843-883-3123.

This is a small but very interesting museum that seems to have a little bit of everything. Chinese, African, Greek, Roman and even some American art are on display. But, perhaps more interesting, is the building - a 1939 art deco private home. The address in 558 Spruce Street. It is adjacent to Timrod Park which is off Graham Street. Open every day except Monday (Sundays afternnoons only). FREE. 843-662-3351

Darlington County Museum
Darlington SC
Here's a novelty, - this museum is actually in the old jail. On display are old photos and other historical artifacts but, especially, they have a lot of genealogical data that is quite interesting even if it doesn't relate to your own ancestry.. Located at 204 Hewitt Street in Darlington. FREE. 843-398-4710

Old Dorchester State Park
Summerville SC
Throughout history, road intersections with a lot of commercial traffic breed prosperous towns and cities. And so was the case with Dorchester, founded in 1697 by a group representing the Congregational Church of Dorchester, Massachusetts. During the Revolution, however, the town was subjected to severe British retributions. A combination of circumstances, both natural and shifting of trade routes, allowed the quick growth of Summerville at the expense of Dorchester. Now we have a 325-acre park with an Interpretive Kiosk and exhibits on the history of Dorchester and area communities and life on upper Ashley River. Other attractions include the site of the tabby fort (built in the mid 18th century), archaeological excavations of the town site and the tower of St. George's Parish Church .

From I-26 exit on US-17-Alt south (exit 199). Go (about 3 miles) to SC-165 and turn left following SC-165 for another 3 miles to SC-642. Another 2 miles and you will be at the park (on your right).,

Park Hours are 9a - 6p daily except Tuesday and Wednesday, year round. Mailing address: 300 State Park Road, Summerville, SC 29485. Phone: (843) 873-1740.
